Merdeka Greetings

Happy Merdeka The above picture is from Alan Wanless. This was taken at the Ipoh Padang back in 1957 (about the same time Tunku made his declaration [...]

Have you heard of….

…..Southern Motors? Which part of town was it? I do wonder if the shop is still there. On an aesthetic note, I do like how the motorcycles have lined up in front of the shop….

A ‘Walk in the Park’?

Is this place part of one of the famous parks in Ipoh? Do you know where it is? Is this place still there?

Scenes from the Perak Turf Club

We thank Ruth Rollitt for these pictures. The first picture (top) shows the quarters, back in 1931. The bottom picture shows the stables. I’ve never seen the inside of the turf club, but I’m sure those of you who have can tell us if much has changed.

Ipoh Baptist Church

Recognise this church? Do you know where it is? Is it still there? Judging from the response to our previous posts, I’m sure you observant lot have NO problem guessing this one! This picture was taken back in 1959 by Keith Nelson.

Federal Restaurant, Ipoh

We thank Keith Nelson for this gem. Just a thought: these young men were obviously checking out the sites of Ipoh Town during that time…..where were YOU back in 1959?

Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri

With this photograph of another Hari Raya Celebration just 100 years ago the staff at ipohWorld wish all our Muslim readers, friends and families across the world, “Selamat Hari Raya.” And to all Malaysians, wherever you may be best wishes for your future and please drive safely.

School Bands at the Perak Stadium

This picture is from Ralph Khaw, who was the drum major in the SMI Cadet Band. This was taken in 1970 at the Perak Stadium – the Ipoh Combined School Bands. Among the schools which participated were SMI, MGS, and Perak Girls’ School. According to Ralph, either Raja Perempuan School or Poi Lam took part as [...]

Specially for our Fans…

We had previous comments about what the Oriental Hotel used to look like. Hence, here is a coloured one of the hotel (which has sadly seen better days). For those who don’t know, this building is now an electrical store.

Would You Believe….

…that Brewster Road was this ‘empty’ back in 1959? From the traffic I see today, I can hardly believe it myself! This picture is courtesy of Keith Nelson, a former British National serviceman.
