“…row, row, row your boat….”
Flooding in Kuala Kangsar had been a problem since 1926, when the royal palace (Istana Sri Sayong) was almost swept away! The picture we have here is from 1967; as you can see, almost half of the Cathay cinema is underwater.
By the looks of things, the men on the boat were probably hoping to catch ‘The Sound of Music’ that day…..

Ho, Ho, Ho Jim. I was once told never tell a British joke to anyone from overseas!

I read somewhere, recently, that the lady whom Julie Andrews portrayed in that movie sold the rights to her side of that story for Mere $9000us.Now when we consider how much the Movie has made, I bet a spoonful of sugar won’t help that medicine go down

I remember the great flood of ‘67 well. It rained non-stop for seven days and seven nights. My siblings and I watched agog with morbid fascination as the water level kept rising by the hour around us until the lower floor of our two-storey house completely disappeared under water. Banished to our bedrooms on the upper floor, we kids amused ourselves by folding paper boats and used our dangling feet to push them around the swirling water. We were competing among ourselves to see who could fold the most elaborate boat, whose boat floated the furthest away, and whose boat stayed afloat the longest. Ah, such simple pleasures of life as innocent kids growing up in that era.
Here’s the news coverage of the great flood of ‘67 by the Straits Times:
