Is this Another Iversen Design Biting the Dust?
Warned that something was “up” in Gopeng Road I dropped by this afternoon. But nothing was “up” however – quite the opposite – No 62 was on the way “down”.
Yes, the Ipoh demolition team were at it again. So I dropped in on the Chinese foreman who seemed to agree with me that it was a terrible shame, but a job is a job! Well, the front still looked pretty OK.
But the back is a different story, where work is well advanced, both inside and out.
Then I noticed the left hand end and from inside saw this beautiful round room with open air designs to the garden and wondered why they had left it intact. Could they be going to rebuild and not demolish after all?
And I wondered – is this the second Iversen building to be destroyed in less than one week or do the owners have some other plan? What do you think?

Sad TT
This used to be my uncle’s residence as the Pengarah JKR Perak, many memories and many incidents too. The son’s bedroom caught fire as he was trying to hide his cigarette, and here where many BMX guys that has even won the extreme games started their trade. There was a ramp built in front of the house in late 80′s. Sad it is, but fact it is …
Would be interesting to know if MBI issued demolition consent for this building…
Just wondering who was the original owner of the house. The owners of houses at Gopeng Road would take a page in the who’s who of Ipoh then.
Housed used to belong to the late widow of Dr E C Lim. Azlan’s daughter could likely be the new owner.
Joel is right about the new owners.
Thanks Joel and Sundra.
Oh dear! Another of my father’s buildings gone – another building designed by B M Iversen – and such a beautiful one. Well maintained in a loveley garden. Why? Do people not see beauty any longer? I can but weep.
Thank you Ipoh World for keeping a former Ipoh Girl staying in touched. I now live in Maui, Hawaii and had the pleasure of staying in 62 Gopeng Road for 3 weeks in March 2012. My mother’s sister, Bebe Lim was the former owner of the house. I know she had loved the house and we had many happy moments there. With tears and appreciation, I thank you all for taking the photos of the beautiful house at its last glorious moment. Aloha, Mien
I too had the pleasure of visiting this lovely home of my Husband’s late aunt a couple years before she passed. It was very breathtaking fir we dont see many properties like this in Hawaii. I do wish I had the opportunity to spend more time in it. I hope some part of it will remain while change is inevitable. Thank you Mien for forwarding this to the family!
Continuing what I wrote earlier – my father designed this house for Dr Lim on Gopeng Road. When I was secretary of the Ipoh Swimming Club in the eary 60s – Dr Lim was chairman of the Club – and a very good one too!
Sultan Azlan’s sister approached the former owner to sell the property to her, and the former owner agreed this will be done after she (the former owner) passed away.
The building is GONE – forever!
This is so sad. As a frequent visitor to this house, it is such a disgrace to see this beautiful house being destroyed. Unfortunately the sales process was a little bit more complicated than what people here suggest.
Fo I understand correctly that there will now be a nw condominium on this and the adjoining plot? At one tome it was rumoured to be another Istana!
Hmm, these has to stop, let’s see what we can do
