…the story continues…
We pick up where we left off in our previous post - regarding the Lido Cinema – where we were told that the the top two pictures were in fact the Rex Cinema and NOT Lido. Today, we present to you MORE pictures of the inside of Lido.
We thank Ruth Rollitt for her contribution.
This was taken by Ruth backĀ in 2009 (see below). It is said to be the inside of the former ticket booth.
And now – the Lido Floor Plans as requested.

Could the first picture be taken in Rex cinema? I saw DRAGON, the one mentioned by Ipohgal.
Hi Tshui,
For this first picture, I have been wondering the same thing too
that it could be the inside of the box office of Rex and not Lido.
For this, I could not confirm as easily as the other blog
“the way it used to be” as I have not been inside the box office.
Now that you mentioned it, I re-studied the floor plans of Lido
again.
Lido had 3 box offices – one by the side corridor towards the
second class seating entrance, one by the front lobby near
the first class entrance. The third box office is actually part
of the manager’s office next to the staircase to the
reserved class. For this box office, the entrance is where the steps are and not at a distance from the entrance. Also, the
pillars don’t look like they match the floor plan.
And now you mentioned the dragon, that is another clue too.
Only Rex would have the dragon because of the perception of
being haunted being next to funeral parlors, coffin shops,
hospice and convalescent homes.
Perhaps Ian can post the floor plan I emailed him here for others
to evaluate.
I would believe that even though a floor plan is copyrighted,
meaning, other people cannot copy the design without permission
from the architect or his descendents or his company etc etc.
—> it is at least public record
with the town council planning department (Dewan Bandar Raya), meaning, the public can ask to look at it. That’s how it is in America and I believe the same for Malaysia.
If the public can look at it, please can you post it as well.
Since I am not as definite as the other picture in the other
blog (the way it used to be), I don’t want to strongly say
one way or another whether it is the box office for Rex or not.
Hopefully other people can give their comments as well.
Thanks.
Hi, I did not post the floor plans as I doubt that they will show up clearly enough having been faxed. Nonetheless I am game to try. Watch this space!
Tshui-this cannot be the dragon Ipohgal described. Your dragon looks like a painting & is on the left of the cinema. I distinctly remembered as one enters Rex, the large 2 dimensioned dragon is on the right side of the wall next to the screen. It had a ferocious look, 2 red eyes lighted by red bulbs & it had a blue background. The head of the dragon was on top, its mid section & tail below.
I’m glad there are others who could remember the dragon so well, so my memories are intact!
T-shui, the dragon that I had mentioned in the previous post is definitely not the one shown in the first picture of this post. This one seems like a drawing to me but the one I could remember so well was a crafted one as it stood out very prominently on the wall of Rex cinema with its red eyes illuminating even in the dark.
HomesickforIpoh, I heard the same theory too about the dragons, they, being celestial animals were purposely installed there to dispel bad “qi” or evil forces since the cinema was located along Coffin Street!
And rosebud – yes, that was the same dragon! It has some white clouds surrounding it too. A very Oriental dragon, I must say. It is a shame if the owners took it down for I believed they are precious works of arts.
Keep on coming back to ipohWorld and you will hear more about the dragons. Coming soon.
