The Sun cinema
the Sun Cinema at old town, now demolished. I lived so near this cinema!!
There can be only one cinema in Ipoh that has a rising sloping road in front of it. That is the Sun cinema with Brewster Road leading up to the Kinta River bridge.
Hi Lam and Steven. yes, it is the Sun Cinema
but can you guys make a rough guess as to which year it is?
“The Rare Breed” starring James Stewart and Maureen O’Hara was a 1966 Western film. You can Google it or search Wiki. However, in those years Sun Cinema was showing reruns or second round films. Thus, the year is probably after 1966.
sun cinema famous for the bedbugs or mooksat.
In the bill board of Sun Cinema, Shaw Brothers were advertising the Rare Breed (1966) in Rex cinema and maybe “The Love Bug” in Lido. (1968)release). Rex sometimes showed re-run movies and not Lido in those days. The black frame glasses and hairstyle of the person in the photo fits the late 1960s. From these evidence, I conclude that the photo was taken in late 1968 or early 1969.
Hi all. based on what Ignatius and IpohBornKid have said, we can narrow down the timeline to anywhere between 1967-1969. Anyone else care to offer more suggestions?
Although the picture on the poster of what is showing at Lido
is not very clear, I can tell it is not “Love Bug” because:
- the look of the car and character does not look like it
- also “Love Bug” played at Cathay and not Lido. This I am very
positive. Although I was only 6 when I saw that movie, I had
the most wonderful day with lots of smiles and laughter seeing
such the most hilarious comedy movie.
One will always remember the happy moments the most when all
else in my life was not so happy at the time.
If the movie poster is “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”, then it is probably 1968.
1968.
Hi HomesickforIpoh – At first I thought the Lido was showing chitty2 bang2 but when I looked up the poster in Wiki, it was an old vintage car. The car in the advert looks like a VW, hence, a love bug. Since both guesses relate to a 1968 release film, then the date is still late 1968 to 1969, giving it a 6 months lag before release.
I am afraid I have to agree with HomesickforIpoh’s selection of the movie showing in Lido according to what I see on the billboard of Lido as shown on the photo. The character standing up on the car is Merry Poppins, acted by Julie Andrews.
