Remember ‘Her’?

I’m refering to this black-beauty……this classic Mercedes (yes, it IS a Mercedes; if you look closely you can see the sign on the hood). This picture is taken from the Yeoh Family album. Judging from the car’s number plate, I’m guessing that this was taken in the early 1940s. I could be wrong though…..you experts out there would know better :)

Another thing that caught my eye was the shop sign (far right) which says: Peter Chong & Co; Educational Supplies, Stationers, Printers, etc. etc. Are they still in business? If so, where in Ipoh are they?

With the little memories that is still left in me, Peter Chong Printers are no more in business. I stand corrected. The office and printing was once in Belfield St. and subsequently it expanded and the printing was done in a bigger facility in First Garden, Ipoh. That same facility is no more now.

I just came back from Belfield Street where Peter Chong & Co used to be. It is No 120 and now an Indian shop called “Divine Home”. They confirmed that Peter Chong moved to First Garden. They also told me that the three shops to the left (now Chennai) were previously Perak Motor Co. and that is confirmed by searching Google. So where are Perak Motor Co now?

Returning to the photograph, to the immediate left of Peter Chong is a sign that seems to say “Hotel” and sure enough the clear Chinese characters say “Lodging House” so my wife tells me. Now FMS was initially (from 1906) just along the Road on the next corner to the right, so what was this hotel called?

Finally, can someone identify the Mercedes model and did it belong to a Yeoh?

You could be right, Ian. I do, however, note that the radiator grill is sloped whilst the 260D is upright and the spare wheel is not at the side of the bonnet. This is going to be a difficult one as cars around that time all looked quite alike and always in black!
