The Memorial Park Anderson Road c1962

This is a postcard featuring the Memorial Park. In the centre is a fountain, which seems to have attracted the attention of those two individuals on the left of it.

On the plaque (centre, bottom) are the words “Memorial Park, 1948-1960″. From this, we understand that this was a remembrance of the Malayan Emergency and those who fell during those difficult times. The park was almost certainly part of the Children’s Playground, which is along Anderson Road.

If anyone out there who has been to the park, or perhaps lived nearby the park, do share your fond memories with us.

    hi Louis,
This postcard is from Ipoh; on the back it also states that this park is “located in the town of Ipoh”. The problem is, we don’t know WHERE in Ipoh.

This post has been edited - we now know that this Memorial Park was part of the Children’s Playground at Anderson Road.

Further to the above, the question must be why has something as important as a memorial to those who died in the Malayan Emergency - and more local people were killed than the Commonwealth troops - been allowed to disappear. What short memories we have!

I still cannot remember this park and fountain. Maybe it was taken down quickly by some authority that did not believe in memorials, but I cannot understand why. Strange things have happened in Ipoh before! But these days nothing much seems to happen as the place struggles on, a mere shadow of the past that Ho Tak Ming is talking about in his new book.

Yes I agree. I believe this memorial park is located at where the current UMNO building stands with a Bank Simpanan Nasional occupying the ground floor.

When I was a kid, the children’s playground had a wading pool and was very popular.

Hi Aaron. Can you remember when exactly the buildings ‘took over’ the park?

A bit fuzzy felicia but it musta been in 1980 or 81 or so. I was still a kid then and remember walking along the temporary wooden pathway built to shield pedestrians from falling construction debris.

I remember there was also an aerial picture of the Perak Chinese Maternity Hospital when in the 40’s it was used by the Japanese as an airport. This thread was posted by a “kintakid”. Unfortunately that picture was taken off. In that picture there were a lot of multi engine bombers parked right in front of PCMH. Bet you guys are surprised.

This is the original thread and page.

Hi Aaron, the picture of the hospital with parked aircraft and the story behind it may be found on our database archive at http://www.ipohworld.org/search8/result.asp?strid=3118. This is copyright 656 Aquadron Association and we had permission to use it for our 2006 “Story of Ipoh” Exhibition, and for our archive. Unfortunately a few people took photographs of it but generally these have disappeared from the web.

Regarding other local photos, while we do not encourage masses of links to other sites we do not take them off (unlike others), but we do encourage you to look at our searchable database first, where we have hundreds of old photos, mostly with researched background.

Having said that we do not have those great Menglembu shots, but would like to if we can get permission.

    Keep on visiting our world!

OK, Copy you on the “links”. Sorry ’bout that, Guv’nor.

I did visit the PCMH picture with the planes and my first impression was that it was used as an airport/airbase, till you explained the photo.

Still it is amazing that all the planes were identified. I’m an enthusiast yet I am not able to name one plane from the picture.
