Some important cultural and natural relics are to be found at Ipoh's Gua Tambun and Gua Naga Mas. The author recounts the findings of a recent outing of the Perak Heritage Society to these two sites, starting at Tambun, where ancient rock paintings are found on a limestone cliff. The paintings, originally discovered in 1959 by Lieutenant Rawlings and estimated to be some 2,000 years old, depict men and animals and provide evidence that humans inhabited the Kinta Valley during this period.
At Gua Naga Mas fossil bones of what is believed to be the skeletal remains of a large cat - such as a tiger or leopard - can be found on the ceiling about 5 metres above the floor. According to the author, estimates of the age of the fossilised remains range from 10,000 to as much as 700,00 years old. The author goes on to stress the importance of conserving these historical treasures and the need to spread the word around to raise awareness on this subject.
