James Lee told us on Facebook: “Sure was. I grew up downing huge bowls of nestum, condensed milk and water. Had it with Milo, with strawberry jam, with kayang and now I’m a 250lb 6 footer. Must have been good for growing boys”.

Thank you for you comment, James :)

    What’s “kayang”?

And thanks for posting the Facebook comment here, felicia. I would not have seen it otherwise.

And to answer your title question: No, Nestum was introduced long after my time — although I do recall that when it was new, it was sometimes used to make desserts for kids and adults!

‘Kayang’ is ‘kaya’, the egg and coconut jam, Ipoh Remembered.
In fact I came to know of it as ‘kayang’ as that was how I too said it when buying those delicious ‘pau’ from the hawker as a kid in Pasir Puteh.
