This was sent to us by Nicholas Jennings. Does anyone recognise the building in the background? The only clue we have is that: upon close inspection, we noticed that this building was built in 1914. Other than that, we’re stumped!
Hi Stephen. yes, it does look a little like the ACS school. but the roof and the tower (on the right) is definately different. any other ideas as to where this place is?
Thank you Mark for stirring up our grey matter. I don’t know why we didn’t think of Eu Chateau. I claim pressure of work! To read more about Eu Chateau click here http://ipohworld.org/search8/result.asp?strid=4837
Thank you also to Nicholas who sent us the scan. What we have to do now is to look at the scan in detail and see if we can find his grandparents in the crowd.
Hard to believe this mansion was just a weekend retreat, but easy to imagine the lavish parties held there with all these distinguished looking guests.
Can anyone identify the mining millionaires Eu Tong Sen and Chung Thye Phin, who built this fabulous pile, somewhere in the gathering?
I can’t see my grandmother among the throng, by my grandfather, JAS Jennings, is the tall, moustachioed gentleman standing in the back row at the mansion’s entrance.
Beautiful building indeed. If possible it should be restored back to it’s original state. I especially like those little ornates (tunjuk langit?) on the ridges. Almost all of the old bangsawan (elite) mansions have them. There used to be a lot of buildings with that kind of facade & roof decor in Ipoh and throughout the state as a matter of fact….until they were torn down or given to neglect one by one. Very sad. We really need to fashion our modern dwellings after some of these old designs again because they are simply beautiful and serve their purpose in a tropical weather setting.
Looks like Forest Lodge. I enlarged the pic and though it isn’t very clear it looks like my grandfather Chung Thye Phin in Chinese jacket and skullcap. Compare it with this one:
The part that craved 1914 do look like ACS school. But when I compare other sections, it doesn’t match.
Could this be one of the building near ACS?
since i am not stay at ipoh…this building also remind me of the building in front of Regal Lounge hotel
