WE are going to celebrate our nation’s 53th Independence Day, and
I wonder how many people really care and know about their heritage?
Are our young urbanites fascinated by this historical landscapes, the heritage of these once bustling mining town and the social history of the communities?

Recently, Fair Park lost its British Colonial housings. I wonder
did anyone document its architectural, artistic or cultural values? At least for the future generation as a record of Ipoh history. Last week, the dismantling of Gopeng pipeline made no
headlines in our daily papers. This clearly reflects that heritage value is worth nothing but RMJuta-juta in scrap metal
business in Jalan Bendhara or Jelapang.

Perak ( which means ’silver’ the color of tin in Malay Language
has always been association with this metal). Tin mining was therefore no doubt that attracted and established the British Administration in 1874. Thus, with passage of time St.Michael School, Railway Station (1914), Town Hall and Post Office (1914), Hong Kong And Shangai Bank Building (1931), Concubine Lane,
Han Chin Pet Soo ( miner’s club by Yau Tet Shin and Leong Fee) and
numerous other buildings that transformed this Orang Asli Village of what it is TODAY.

Hi Sundralingam. About those Fair Park houses and shop houses…did ANYONE even notice that they’re gone? Nothing was mentioned. The bulldozers came and did their job, but I didn’t hear of any protest from the residents there. before those houses went, I’m sure there were people living there. where did they move to?
Hope someone out there could tell us….

Felica, I am yet to know about the residents views. Or probably they received some compensation, anyone knows about it?
