No prizes for guessing what this man is up to!
I’m sure some of you are already salivating at this picture. Yes, folks…this is the one and only Cendol! Perhaps not the most famous one in Ipoh, but this stall is quite popular – judging by the crowd (see below).
What we’d like to know is: WHERE in Ipoh can you find the best Cendol?
Some years ago this site held two of the original Panglima Lane homes from 1893. Then one literally fell down into a pile of bricks. Fortunately no one was hurt. Then because the second one was considered dangerous it was also taken down.
For a while it became a sort of recreation site but soon the Lalang took over and it became an eyesore.
Just in the last few days a team of contractors moved in and this is what the site looked like this morning.
From the position of the concrete and reinforcement it looks like a double unit is going up but the big question is what will they look like from the Lane? As this is one of the main attractions of the Ipoh Heritage Trail, have the Town Council insisted on an old style matching facia to blend in with the old homes still there or have they approved some monstrous, faceless structure as they have done so often before?
Time will tell but I know what I would like to see.
Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah passed away today at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur.
Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Bainun and the sultan’s children, including the Acting Raja Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, were by his side when he passed away.
The sad news was announced by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir live on RTM1.

Does anyone remember this? I was surprised myself when I saw it – the Planta Margarine I know always came in plastic tubs 😉 Perhaps someone out there remembers this brand of margarine – when it used to come in tins.

Our donor Mano told us that: “The three wheeler is the Piaggio Ape. Unfortunately, it’s not a full picture of the scooter with the ‘Ovaltine’ as the subject was the toddler, my brother. The photo was taken in 1965. He had recently wrecked his tricycle and rolling one of it’s wheels, ‘parked’ it against the wheel of the scooter.”
Hence our question: were you a fan of Ovaltine? Has the taste changed over the years? 🙂

We thank Ruth Iversen Rollitt for these photographs. On the left is the Lima Blas Estate Manager’s bungalow built by B M Iversen for his brother Werner as referred to in the earlier post below – just as it was in those days. On the right is the same bungalow (photo taken around 2008). Wouldn’t it be nice if more was done in preserving such places – especially in Ipoh? Just a thought 🙂
Our photographer tells us that this shop is at Jalan Pasir Puteh (near the market). So I’m sure the Pasir Puteh folks would be familiar with this restaurant.
Is Wan Ton Mee one of their specialties? Do they serve other local delights too?

In one of our old posts about B M Iversen, someone suggested that the city council should name a road after Iversen. Then, we received a recent e-mail from his daughter with a picture of a CLUB named after him 😉
Yes, there’s an Iversen Club at the Lima Blas Estate – this is what Ruth Iversen Rollitt told us. Incidentally, Ruth’s uncle – Werner Iversen – was the Manager of the Lima Blas estate.
Anyone seen/heard of this place?
The Ipoh Railway station forecourt underwent a major renovation recently and one of the first things the tourist sees when he arrives is a large round fountain area surrounded by nicely constructed boundaries which hold engraved pictures and words about the delights of Perak. I took friends down there and here is a sample of what I found. They are all as bad as each other.
This is a picture of Cunung Lang and the original colour can be seen at the top.

Now I promise you that these were taken this afternoon in the bright sunshine and they have not been meddled with in PhotoShop or in any other way.
Now it is not for me to judge but I do believe that somebody in authority should ask if the money was well spent.

Chooi-Hoong Foong’s father was one of the Volunteer Police back in the 1950s (see picture below).

This is one dessert Ipoh has long been famous for……Tau Foo Far for those feeling a little peckish, and Soya Bean Milk for those who want something cold on a hot day.
We wonder if Funny Mountain’s tau foo far is as good as the one Ipohgal’s father used to make 😉

We thank our donor – Mohamad Sharizan bin Mohd. Supian – for this picture. The discoloration is probably due to water. The Chinese words roughly state that this was taken at the funeral of Mr Chan.
It’s not there anymore, but those of you who remember it are probably grinning at these pictures.
These were taken in 2011 (by Charlie Choong) – yes, this is the same house near the Polo Ground. Does anyone know the story behind this unique looking abode? Perhaps someone knows the architect? We’d love to hear from you 🙂
Yes, this is indeed a Malay Funeral procession. This was taken, with kind permission, from the Imperial War Museum London. The photo was taken from a colour transparency, back in the 1950s. If you look closely you can see the Ipoh East Post Office in the background – that should give you a clue about the location.
