Before Strepsils…. I doubt this brand needs an introduction. How many of you remember these jujubes? Were they really effective for sore throats and such? As much as the menthol effect was soothing, it did nothing to cure or treat the condition. Some people might swear by it but it has not convinced me. Yes I also took Strepsils as well. However I have not taken any of these and their derivatives for over a good part of thirty years. Neither did I suffer sore throat like I used to. It has been a rarity. This was because of a better understanding of the causative factors of sore throat and taking preventative actions before it occured. Example being flu or common cold could bring on sore throat due to dehydrating factors. Also our hygiene habits in private and in public have improved; thus reducing cross infection of harmful bacteria or other infectious organisms. I dare say the hand washing routine has definitely contributed to a reduction to potentially infectious episodes and the avoidance of dirty outlets, where hygiene conditions are far from satisfactory. Many eateries in the past before stringent regulations were imposed used to wash the cutlery and dishes in just the same bowl of water. As recently as three years ago, I noticed the same practice outside a Penang coffee shop mee stall. Yuk, it put me off for the rest of the day.
