Saving Yesterday For Tomorrow
  1. Ipoh Remembered says:

    Dear felicia

Yes, that’s right: HSBC bought the old and venerable Mercantile Bank in 1959 — not only the branches in Ipoh and Taiping, of course, but all operations world-wide.

For decades HSBC kept the old name going, so one still had a “Mercantile Bank” account, and signage at branches still said “Mercantile Bank, Ltd.,” and so on.

But at some point, HSBC stopped using the “Mercantile Bank” name in Malaysia and Singapore, and by the mid-’80s only operations in Hongkong, Thailand, and London were still using the old name. When Citibank bought the business, it, too, kept the name in use, but I’m not sure for how long or what happened after that.
