Kinta Swimming Club – Open and Beautiful
Yes here it is and I am sure that the Hong family were overwhelmed when it was officially opened by Michelle Yeoh just recently for I know how much Hong senior has put into this project. Congratulations!

The membership details are as follow:
Currently they are promoting 3 categories of membership:
1) Family Transferable Membership (parents with children under 18 yrs old) – RM5,000 joining fees and RM 45 monthly subscriptions (To commemorate their recent reopening, the club is offering the 1st 200 new Family Membership free of monthly subscriptions for the next 24 months)
2) Single Transferable Membership (for one person only) – RM2,500 joining fees and RM 45 monthly subscriptions. (To commemorate their recent reopening, the club is also offering the 1st 50 new Single Membership free of monthly subscriptions for the next 24 months)
3) Single Membership (Non-Transferable Annual Plan) – RM800 joining fees with no monthly subscription at all. Membership is valid for 1 year only.
The joining fees will increased once all the club facilities are operational after the 2nd quarter of next year.

The Public Pool
This is an 80s picture of the Majlis Perbandaran Ipoh (MBI) swimming pool. The pool is near the Perak Stadium; also part of the sports complex which has a velodrome, hockey stadium and an indoor stadium (Stadium Indera Mulia). The pool is opened to the general public, and it has also been a venue for various swimming competitions.
There used to be a cozy pool-side restaurant too. Last I checked, the restaurant was still there – it becomes really crowded during Ramadan. The pool itself has been renovated time and again. I think the last major job was done before the SEA Games in 1998 (if I’m wrong, I stand corrected).
Anyone know when the pool was built? Or perhaps there was something else in the area before the pool came about…..

Taiping Club’s Jungle Swimming Pool, 1959
This picture shows three “young at heart” Europeans enjoying the slide into the top pool of three that made up the Taiping Club’s swimming pool in the 1950s. It is still there but sadly overgrown and in a serious state of disrepair. Of course the club now has a new pool.
A user of the pool in 1959, Isobel Hatherley, recalls:
“This afternoon we went to the Taiping Swimming Club – very different from Ipoh. It is quite a drive up the hill through the jungle to a delightful waterfall that feeds the baths. It is much more primitive than Ipoh, with rather murky looking water, but it is really cold and refreshing, whereas at Ipoh the water is usually tepid. I had decided to give up swimming when we left Ipoh, but there were so few people up there I couldn’t resist it.”
Does anyone out there have more memories of this unique recreational facility?

A Dozen Young Swimmers and a “Gwei Poh”! In ACS Pool?
This came with a batch of SMI photos. but without any information. Where is the pool? Who are the boys and who is the European lady with their trainer? Can you help please?
Bathing Beauties and SMI Boys
This little photo is originally just 2 inches square. The girls costumes (or were they called ‘bathing suits’ in those days) are very interesting. Would today’s young ladies like the fashion? We are guessing the boys are from SMI.

Fun in the Swimming Pool
Could someone please confirm the location of this pool and if possible when the photo was taken and who is in the picture?
