Familiar? For those of you who are stumped, this is the Raja Perempuan School (RPS) – which is along Chung Thye Phin Road (opposite Main Convent Primary School).
We’d like you to have a guess at the date of this picture (we don’t know ourselves!). Maybe if anyone of you know the history of the building, you could share with the rest of us? 🙂
Hey i can see proton wira there.. This picture could be after 1993, not too old!
good observation, Sathis! you might be right….we’ll see what the others have to say 🙂
This picture was taken in 1993, the slogan ” Perak Nombor Satu”, was introduce then by the State Education Director, Mr. Abd. Rahim in 1993 when he became the director. However, in the education field Perak had never made to the number 1 spot. Flop!
If you are right, Sundralingam, it could be any time after 1993 for he was Pengarah of the State Education Department for some years.
Yes, Perak never made it to Number 1 in the true sense of the word but we did score in a few areas. Sam Tet, Ipoh was top Form Six school for many times! Even little known Seri Keledang, Menglembu had a top student in Form Six one year and of course ACS Ipoh too had top Form Six students! So, don’t be so depress about our State under achieving.
Hi everyone! i guess we’ve established the year as 1993 then. does anyone know a little background of this school – ie. when it began / who was the founder..etc.?
An ignominious fate to a once glamorous home of a rich man. He’d never dreamt his dream home would turn into a public place one day, just like many other palatial homes of the rich in Ipoh.
Yes, PT…..i too had a feeling that this building once belonged to a tycoon. we hope SOMEONE out there might have a little story or two to share 😉
According to my mum, the house definitely belonged to a rich man but she is not sure who. As for who the founder was, she is not sure but she remembers her teachers saying that the school was under the patronage of the then Sultan of Perak. Which Perak sultan she cannot remember.
thanks for the tip, Alexandra.
all i know this must be after 1992 cos i leave the school on 1992.
This might help, http://www.smkrajaperempuanipoh.com/RPS%20Main/sejarah.html
This was Chew Boon Juan’s house in Ipoh. I believe he took semi-retirement around 1912 and resided mainly in his mansion on Gurney Drive in Penang. I understand two old ladies, probably his daughters, lived here for many years before it was turned into the school. Chew Boon Juan has numerous descendants in present day Ipoh who would be able to provide a more detailed history.
Here is a mini bio of Chew Boon Juan:
