Would you like to be an original author of this blog?

We are looking for a limited number of authors who would like to contribute articles on this site, about heritage topics in Perak. If you would like to be one of our authors, please email us at info@ipohworld.org and we can register you as an author. However, should we find unsuitable content being proposed, the author and content will be deleted without notice. We look forward to hearing from you.

Oh No! Not Just the Roof ……….

We featured this building in http://www.ipohworld.org/blog/?p=1712 where we showed the original mansion that belonged to Dato Seri Lau Pak Kuan OBE JP and what the owners of the Coliseum Club had done to deface this beautiful building.

In the comments on that blog mashi74 reported that the stylistic roof had been removed and, as you can see from this photo it has been replaced with something far less easy on the eye. But worse! Look what they have done to the stonework! Garish is not a strong enough word for this abomination.

And finally, it appears that have torn the whole inside out and are to renovate with modern (Ugh!) materials.

Have these people no eye for beauty, history and heritage. Maybe they just have no soul!

These people have more money than sens(e). Would have been easier and cheaper to just build on a vacant block of land or torn down the whole building from the start. Probably will try to compliment the insides with the exterior now - lots of “golden” features.

The streets and buildings of our town are part of the historic character of Ipoh. Each heritage building tells the story of its unique development, and gives us a sense of place, continuity and cultural identity. Thus, the importance of our heritage is nevertheless immeasurable, and they not be torn down or destroyed. But man’s greed has no limits, few are in focus on saving the best past for the future. It’s a money, money, money…..world.

Allan, we shall keep our eyes open - they might try to blend the interior with “golden features”, just to fit the garish exterior ;-)

Sundra, you took the words out of my mouth! :-)

I was sadden to read about the blatant destruction of old buildings and our landscape. None for the future generation to inherit.
Most of the present generation do not possess aesthetic appreciation of the buildings and landscape of Ipoh town.
I agree with you all that the present day, people have turn into a mercenary society. No regards for honor, honesty and empathy for others. I am glad to read in the Ipohworlds that there are some left. We share the joy of remembering the good old days. The simple life style, respect for elders, hard working and honest folks. They never complained about poverty but with the sweat on the brows and toil of their hands, they provide for their families. Folks of the past in Ipoh possess not much materialistic things e.g. computer, LCD, vacuum cleaner, micro-wave oven etc. They don’t need to keep up with the Joneses. With the bare minimum they are contented. Children are healthy and happy with the games they played with each other in the backlanes or villages. They make do with rubber seeds, angsana red seeds, F & N bottle caps, home made kites etc. for toys. They interacted so well with one another. The adults are courteous and friendly with one another. You used to see them greeting one another on the road. The usual greeting “Have you eaten your rice.”
When I reminisce about the by-gone days it brings a sweet sadness to my heart. Sweet because I am glad I lived in that generation and experienced the life. Sad because I witnessed the changes so drastic in the present time.
Well guys keep up the good work in this blog. Let us continue to blog and people who read these blogs may know what the elders had gone through and the way they lived.

    Hi Katherine,

Thanks for that and your words are exactly why I want to produce the book. Furthermore if financially possible I want one to be given to every school in Ipoh for their library.

However I am still short of articles and I know that we have one of yours but is there any chance of another please.

To the rest of you out there, more than 4500 people read this site in July. Without doubt, many of you will have been Ipoh youngsters at sometime, so surely some of you can write an article about growing up here. Please put that pen to paper now.
